Fuel Cell Systems Ltd wins UK's HyHAUL Hydrogen Freight Project

Hydrasun is delighted to share that Fuel Cell Systems, acquired by Hydrasun in 2022, has been appointed as the Hydrogen Refuelling Infrastructure Partner for the UK's HyHAUL Hydrogen Freight Project, the UK’s flagship hydrogen powered heavy goods vehicle (HGV) initiative, marking another major milestone in the company’s growth journey.

Hydrasun’s strategic investment in Fuel Cell Systems has enabled the company to scale its operations, accelerate hydrogen refuelling product development, and strengthen its position in the hydrogen mobility sector. Since the acquisition, Fuel Cell Systems have extended their technical capability and market reach leading to the award of several high-profile contracts to supply hydrogen refuelling equipment to projects contributing to the transition to low emission transport across the UK.

The award of this latest project reflects the growing demand for reliable, scalable hydrogen solutions, and underscores the success of Fuel Cell System’s and Hydrasun’s long-term commitment to innovation and sustainability in the hydrogen economy.

As part of this partnership, Fuel Cell Systems will supply and install four advanced ‘HyFleet’ refuelling systems at three key locations along the M4 corridor, including Reading and Avonmouth. Each system will provide on-site hydrogen storage, compression, and dispensing capabilities designed for fuelling heavy-duty logistics operations.

Hydrasun’s recent success in winning contracts with the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub and the HyHAUL project highlights Hydrasun’s increasing role in providing infrastructure solutions for the future of hydrogen mobility across the UK.

HyHAUL

HyHAUL, funded by the UK Government through the £200 million Department for Transport’s (DfT) Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme, aims to deploy 30 hydrogen-powered HGVs by 2026, with a long-term goal of expanding to 300 vehicles by 2030. The project will create the UK's first hydrogen freight corridor, reducing emissions and supporting logistics operators in achieving net zero targets.

Neil Thompson, CEO said “This project win is a testament to the vision and capability of the Fuel Cell Systems team. Our investment has enabled FCS to develop scalable hydrogen refuelling systems to support projects such as HyHaul, and in doing so grow the hydrogen supply chain in the UK . We’re proud to see that vision being realised through first of a kind initiative to decarbonise transport for the UK.”
